The Crows

We drive here
leading our wake -
a billowing procession
of brassy dust -
to where the ground
is ravaged and
the hapless skeletons
of broken trees
lie in sombre rows -
such open carnage.

A murder of crows rise
at least two hundred strong
all tips - wings, beaks & claws

It's Poseidon's shadow -
this black wave -
their numbers rise
in tidal ark
to a surviving tree

which stands strong
and forgiving
in this graveyard of fellows.

  1. Bleak and beautiful, you know how to paint a picture with words that’s for sure! And by funny coincidence, I reached these (wonderful) lines:

    “It’s Poseidon’s shadow –
    this black wave –
    their numbers rise
    in tidal ark
    to a surviving tree”

…only to realise the song I am listening to is titled ‘In the Wake of Poseidon’! Ah the universe and her little jokes. Great stuff!
