in my child body
i swam
in the brown swirl
of dam water, mud,
and eels' whiskers
and the temperature
comforted
or plunged around me
- the shock of it -
so i wriggled to action
seeking comfort
again
not knowing where
in my adult body
i'm again adrift
at the mercy
of wafting shocks
one moment me
as I've always been
the next
gripped tight in the icy
suck of a whirlpool
so i wriggle to action
seeking comfort
again
not knowing where
Lovely abstract imagery!

‘one moment me
as I’ve always been
the next
gripped tight in the icy
suck of a whirlpool’ – I can identify with this for sure!

the whirlpool is a cruel, kinetic emblem of the forces that swirl around us and threaten to drag us down; a very effective poem 🙂
