Insomnia

I am awake
watching gaps in leaves
seeing woolly mammoths

those creatures
of the past, preserved
in ice and mud

I must not wallow
like them for ten thousand years
but leap up and

shake myself
celebrate the fallen crystals
shattering

about my toes
This is my truth
penned like knife strips

through a canvas sky

  1. I love the line about wallowing for a thousand years. You see in a poem what you want to see, and if it isn’t what the poet intended, well, I’m not sure it matters. The image at the end is very striking.

    1. Thank you. I think you’re right. Art is open to interpretation. And if the artist doesn’t convey exactly what they intended 🤷‍♀️ (as the French might say. 😉I don’t know if Dauphy agrees.)It’s more about generating a response. Hopefully at least in the direction the artist intended.

      1. That’s true. Sometimes people read far more into my poems than I intended, and I think oh, that’s very clever. Other times people miss what I intended, but seem to enjoy it anyway.
