Smile in the Hail

I'm no peach
those oft' sung beauties
soft, rose skin
blushing thin
camelia-petal fragile
bruising dark and deep

I eschew
visual assessment.
Hard, wrinkled
passion fruit
vivacity clutched inside
bright orange, tangy.

The hail stones
still hurt and I cringe
but that juice,
that inner
exuberance huddles still
for true friends to find
