I am a cat

Spring whispers in to softly tend
wattle blossoms - their yellows blend.
I’m a cat so the sun’s my friend
Breathe in, breathe out, and claws extend.

A wooden chest itself commends
for sleep’s refresh, body’s unbend.
Breathe in, breathe out, and claws extend.
I’m a cat so the sun’s my friend.

The dog would play me without end
but my right to sleep I’ll defend;
I’m a cat so the sun’s my friend.
Breathe in, breathe out, and claws extend.

Felines ignore, nay buck the trend:
on exercise we don’t depend.
Breathe in, breathe out, and claws extend.
I’m a cat so the sun’s my friend.

Just stay away. I’ll not offend
if you respect what I intend.
I’m a cat so the sun’s my friend.
Breathe in, breathe out, and claws extend.

    1. THanks, Kate. What an amazing poem that is! All the God stuff confused me a bit but the capturing of a cat’s pride, delicacy, arrogance, agility, certainty… it’s all there. Thank you so much for sharing!

  1. I can see my friend’s cat sprawled out in the sun, totally content 🙂 interestingly, I’ve read an article about pets in lockdown and how cats seem to resent the extra attention they get, while dogs seem to lap it up 🙂

  2. I love how you made the cat came to life. Love the rhyming pattern as well. So delightful to read tonight.

  3. Love this, Worms! Well-observed and well-written. My favourite stanza:

“Felines ignore, nay buck the trend:
    on exercise we don’t depend.
Breathe in, breathe out, and claws extend.
I’m a cat so the sun’s my friend.”
