It’s the eye lid. It was just dozing in the shade. I went out and fed it some chicken but it didn’t seem super hungry. I think it was waiting for Mum or Dad to come.
Which bit? A couple of days later there was a dead magpie on our lawn. I did wonder if it was the same one. But I’m not great at identifying maggies. When we rescued a baby magpie 8 years ago, it really wanted help. It basically ran up to us begging for food. But this one, although curious through the window, definitely didn’t want me getting too close.

I don’t think they normally sleep on the ground. They’re always moving, except when anting but that is done in company.

Hmmm. Well maybe it did get killed, poor thing. We did offer it assistance because it was certainly unusual to see it there.
