A Villanelle

I have no interest in the news
in which I can’t find a marbled fact,
just people with power spouting views

I feel I have to hunt for clues
where truth and fiction interact
I have no interest in the news

I want hope, tea with kindness, light diffuse;
not lies like eggshells: dirty, cracked
of people with power spouting views.

My head’s in sand, heart in my shoes
as optimism founders; our systems hacked
I have zero interest in the news

For world leaders’ claims I can’t enthuse,
I wouldn’t care if the lot were sacked
they’re people with power spouting views

So I hide in bubble’s rainbow hues,
keeping my kids’ innocence intact.
I have no interest in the news,
ignoring people with power spouting views.

  1. Excellent; I have only written two villlanelles; they are tricky to write; you pulled it off; my partner does not like watching the news; Skyhooks had a hit single in the early seventies called ‘Horror Movie’, referring to the nightly news —
